I do not think that word means what you think it means

by Shanna Katz

You’ve seen The Princess Bride, right? I mean, everyone and their lover has seen it. Anyways, in case you haven’t, here is the important part. This guy uses the word “Inconceivable!” all the time, and most of the time, it’s not quite right.

A Rose By Any Other Name…

By Shanna Katz

As of late, there has been a lot of discussion around the new Google+ policy of requiring “real names” from all of its’ users, which seems to have morphed into the requirement of “legal names.” There isn’t any exact and specific policy that defines a “real” name, and thousands of people have lost their profiles

Multiple Identities = Multiple Forms of Oppression

By Shanna Katz

I’m part of the LGBTQ community. Sometimes it isn’t that great; I have less rights than many members of our society, I can be fired just for being queer in many states, and while hate crimes laws exist, it doesn’t prohibit bullying of folks like me, the stares, being yelled at and told I’m sinning, and so on.

Perverts Give Back Too

Something that our communities, small and insular as we may be, have on many others, is how we take care of our own. Sure, many faith based communities have holiday programs and outreach throughout the year. However, very few identity based communities, particularly ones around activities and relationships, take the time and energy to support […]

The Ally of My Ally Should Be My Ally

One of the things that each marginalized community needs to work on learning is that we must support our allies in other communities, in order to ask them to support us. As a member of several marginalized communities, as well as a staunch ally to others, it so saddens me when I see the division […]

Access This

Accessibility. We tend to give that a lot of lip service, whether we’re talking about sex education or kink events, but honestly, do we even know what that actually means? In conversation about events, we speak to wanting them to be accessible, and everyone nods their head, but how do we know what accessible is […]

Protecting Against Predators

If you have ever been out and about in the kink community, poly community, and even the queer community, you have probably run across the concept of predators within the community. Every community has them; every community SHOULD have their own ways of dealing with them, or at least protecting the community from them. Sadly, […]

White Washed Communities

When I hang out in my communities of “alternative sexuality” (read: folks that tend to identify as kinky, queer and/or non-monogamous), I see a sea of White. Not white as in contrast to the black of the leather, or the rainbow of gayness. No, I see lots and lots of Caucasian folks. And folks, this […]

But Aren’t Lesbians So Boring?

I hate how we, within our communities, works so hard to police, to judge, and to ultimately tear our own communities apart. Heck, who needs the conservatives and the far right to bring us down, when truly, we are already working as small groups to tear us apart from the inside? Just the other day, […]
